Aleper seals GC, with two Lunsar women on the podium
The women’s Tour de Lunsar presented by Team Africa Rising concluded today with a 20-lap criterium around the centre of Lunsar. A massive attendance at the roadside created a pulsating atmosphere, with fans keen to see their home favourites go up against the international opposition of Mary Aleper (Black Mamba Development Squad).
Yesterday, Aleper took a huge lead in the GC, and so the second stage became more about chasing a result than overturning the deficit.
After five laps, Aleper rode clear of the others, clearly intent on adding to her impressive lead. From there, the Ugandan never looked back, eventually taking the stage win with a time of 01:26:04.
The race behind for the podium places was hotly contested by the group immediately behind the Ugandan rider on the road.
It was Blessing Jabbie of Kono who won this mini-sprint, followed over the line closely by Mbalu Fofanah and Isatu Bangura, both home riders for Lunsar Cycling Team.
This was enough to nab Fofanah and Bangura a spot each on the final GC podium.
All that remains is to say a big, big tenki plenty to all the fans, supporters and of course, sponsors, who have turned up at the roadside to show their support for women’s cycling in Africa.
